Poway High School senior Shayla Haggerty is one of 26 students in San Diego County who are receiving a total of $83,000 in Don Diego college scholarships this year.
Haggerty, 18, is receiving a $1,500 Junior Livestock Auction scholarship. She said she plans to apply the scholarship toward her major in agriculture systems management at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo.
The major combines engineering and business with agricultural studies, which will train her to design environmentally friendly ranches, she said.
“Once I started 4-H I wanted to work with cattle and any kind of livestock,” said Haggerty, who was involved in 4-H as a youth and returned to it in her freshman year.
Don Diego Chairman Stephen Shewmaker describes the recipients as “exceptional.”
“Individually, our Class of 2024 Scholars are driven to make their community and the world a better place,” he said. “Together, they embody the quintessential attributes of a Don Diego Scholar. We are delighted to help propel them on their amazing life journeys.”
The Don Diego Scholarship Foundation Board of Directors chose the scholarship recipients from 89 applications that were submitted.
Along with raising pigs and cows, Haggerty said she helps care for horses at her family’s Poway Equestrian Center. Every year that she has shown her animals at the San Diego County Fair she said she has taken them through the Junior Livestock Auction.
“I was very excited and very grateful for the scholarship,” Haggerty said. “The fair is a huge part of what I work for. It’s nice to be getting something back and being a part of the community.”
The Scholars will be celebrated at Don Diego’s June 13 Gala and Old Dominion Concert at the San Diego County Fair. Tickets for this limited-availability event are available online atdondiegoscholarship.org.
Don Diego annually offers college scholarships in various categories to students who reside in San Diego County and have participated in the San Diego County Fair and/or other activities associated with the Del Mar Fairgrounds.
