President of Franklin College, Kerry Prather in his office during a 2022 “Prather points” interview for The Franklin.
Two weeks ago, the U.S. Department of Education (ED) gave colleges 14 days to comply with the “Dear Colleagues” letter banning race-based preferences in admissions, hiring, scholarships, and more. Failure to comply could result in losing federal funding, which at Franklin College affects aid for about 375 students.
Prather said that Franklin College, along with other private Indiana colleges, examined their mission statements and programming for discriminatory or exclusionary practices.
“I know our students got instantly anxious, and understandably so. The truth is, we just don’t have any of those,” he said. “Everything that we do out of the CDI and elsewhere on this subject is all based on inclusiveness. So there isn’t anything that is the type of thing that I think the administration is wanting to have eliminated.”
The only exception are endowed scholarships that contain a racial criterion, Prather said. He added that Franklin College is consulting their attorneys to make a judgment.
“Not everybody’s interpretation of the Supreme Court ruling is the same. So whether that actually extends to things like scholarships and support services, I think right now, is an open question,” he said.
Prather said that they will continue to take things one step at a time and they expect that more guidance will come as time goes on.
“So I just want our students to have confidence in it fact that we’re gonna keep doing what we’re doing,” he said.
“Dean Jones and I met… with some representatives of individual organizations supported by the CDI, and we just told them the same thing. Everything you’re doing is exactly what we would like to have done on this campus. None of it is prohibited by what the federal government has said.”
