For the past 42 years, the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association has presented Junior Mannies Scholarships to seniors who have a physical handicap, but have contributed to their respective school’s athletic program.
Columbus North’s Ben Ferguson is this year’s lone winner of the Junior Mannies Scholarship. Ferguson battles cystic fibrosis, but has been a key member of the Bull Dog boys basketball squads the past two years.
“It’s a great honor, and I’m very appreciative of this award,” Ferguson said. “I would also say I’m very appreciative of all my coaches and friends who have supported me throughout this journey. I could not have done it without them.”
Ferguson, who carries a 3.92 GPA, plans to attend Taylor University. He plans to major in finance and try out for basketball team.
This season, Ferguson was a key reserve on a North team, coached by his father Paul, that went 19-4, its best season in more than a decade.
“I had a lot of fun playing,” Ben Ferguson said. “Last season to this season, we grew a ton as a team. We didn’t perform like we wanted to in sectional, but the record that we had and what we accomplished during the season was great. It was an honor to be a part of that basketball team.”
