TERRA ALTA, W.Va. (WV News) — Members of the Preston County Chamber of Commerce gathered at High Ground Brewing for the Chamber’s annual scholarship auction.
This year marked the fourth installment of the auction, an event that raises funds for the Chamber’s annual scholarship presented to Preston High School seniors during Senior Awards Night, officials said.
Chamber Executive Director Kristy Ash said the annual scholarship auction reflects the Chamber’s belief in higher education.
Every year, the Chamber aims to offer at least one $500 scholarship, with additional awards provided if enough funds are raised, officials said.
Whether for a student pursuing college or a trade certification, the goal is that Preston County’s rising students will one day return home and invest in their community, Ash said.
The scholarship has long been offered by the Chamber. Initially, funds came from membership dues, but the group later moved away from that method, Ash explained.
Wanting to continue its support for students, the Chamber created the auction after drawing inspiration from other fundraisers, she said.
“We wanted to make sure that the tradition continues and help support at least one Preston High School senior with a scholarship,” Ash said. “We have done very well (with the fundraiser). Last year we raised over $1,000.”
This year, eligibility for the scholarship changed. It will now be awarded to Preston High School seniors who have a family member in the Chamber, officials said.
Chamber board member LaDeana Teets said she believes the annual auction is a meaningful tradition.
“It’s just good to be able to help with education — we all know what it costs to send a child to college and every little bit helps,” she said, adding that she hopes to see more people support the event in the future.
The application requires a simple essay, yet many students provide profound answers, Teets said.
Preston County doesn’t have much high-paying industry. The area relies on small businesses and a close-knit community of farmers, making the cost of college a challenge for many families, she explained.
With that in mind, supporting students of local businesses and families is part of the Chamber’s mission, she said. Pursuing higher education is critical for a young person’s future.
“I think the more we help our kids the more likely they will come back,” Teets said, adding that Chamber members hope to see many students return and reinvest in the community that supported them in their youth.
