Brady Lane
LAPEER — Four Lapeer High School (LHS) graduates from the Class of 2025 have been named recipients of the Jodi Johnson Memorial Scholarship from Project K-9 Hero.
LHS grads Brady Lane, Joshua Cipielewski, Mya McKenna and Baylee Osentoski were among six winners of the annual award, which recognizes outstanding students who have achieved a cumulative 3.0 grade point average (GPA) or higher and are entering a field of study at an accredited post-secondary institution or accredited veterinary technician school. The awardees must be pursuing an associate, undergraduate, graduate or postgraduate degree in one of the following fields of study: pre-vet, pre-med, animal science, biology, physiology, zoology, veterinary science, biological science or chemistry.
Each winner receives a $1,000 scholarship from Project K-9 Hero, which provides assistance with medical costs, rehabilitation, rehoming, food and end of duty services for retired police K-9s and military working dogs.
Joshua Cipielewski
The Jodi Johnson Memorial Scholarship was created to remember the life of Jodi Johnson, a 1997 graduate of Lapeer West High School who passed away in 2018. Johnson was a passionate promoter of the K-9 Project Hero mission and a lifelong animal lover.
Below are bios of the scholarship recipients from Lapeer High School:
• Brady Lane graduated with a 4.106 grade point average and participated in football, basketball, and baseball during his career at Lapeer High School. Lane was selected team captain of the football team and earned Saginaw Valley League Honorable Mention honors. Lane earned the Scholar Athlete Award for his grades as well as participating in the National Honors Society (NHS), Health Occupation Students of America (HOSA) and OMNI Leadership Club.
Lane also completed over 100 hours of community service that included food drives, leadership forums, helping at elementary schools, giving tours and working on environmental projects. He will attend Michigan State University in the fall to major in Kinesiology. His goal is to pursue his master’s degree and become a certified physician assistant.
Mya McKenna
• Joshua Cipielewski graduated with a 4.0465 grade point average. Some of his accomplishments at Lapeer High School were: National Honor Society, varsity pin for academics (2022- 2024), varsity letter for academics (2023) and 2025 Youth Citizen of the Year for Lapeer. Cipielewski also completed over 120 hours of community service with St. Paul Lutheran Church and School, First Presbyterian Church of Lapeer, 8th Grade Career Connections at Mott Community College, the City of Lapeer Police Department, Lapeer Days, Crossroads Baptist Church and Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW).
Cipielewski will attend Saginaw Valley State University in the fall to pursue his dream to become a surgeon.
• Mya McKenna graduated from Lapeer High School with a 3.7 grade point average. She received the LeaderFund “Leadership Award and was named “Athlete of the Month” twice by her volleyball and tennis coaches.
Baylee Osentoski
McKenna was also selected by her school and teachers to attend multiple women’s summits and leadership summits and served as captain on her volleyball and tennis teams for multiple years.
McKenna has been involved in her community by volunteering with the Lapeer County Sheriff’s Office, and participating in such events such as “Shop With A Cop.” She was also active with the Youth Advisory Council, where she was involved with making blankets for the women’s shelter, providing clothes and food to the food banks and homeless shelters, and helping paint the window of a shop downtown that helps give homeless citizens materials.
McKenna will attend Grand Valley State University in the fall to pursue a career in nursing.
• Baylee Osentoski graduated from Lapeer High School with a 3.72 grade point average. Osentoski played volleyball starting in seventh grade and became a varsity team leader by her sophomore year. She also coached two elementary school volleyball teams during her senior year after sustaining a season-ending injury.
Through her participation in the LINKS Peer to Peer program, Osentoski supported students with disabilities in classroom settings, helping them with schoolwork, social interactions and daily routines. She also completed over 100 community service hours through school and volunteer programs as a member of the National Honor Society.
Osentoski will attend Grand Valley State University in the fall to pursue a Doctor of Occupational Therapy.
Riley Porter from South Lyon High School and Lilly Colley from Clio High School were also named recipients of the 2025 Jodi Johnson Memorial Scholarship. Porter will be attending the University of Michigan, while Colley will attend Grand Valley State University. Both are pursuing careers in the medical field.
