Clear Channel Outdoor (CCO, Financial) and Project Yellow Light have announced the winners of their 14th annual scholarship competition, which aims to raise awareness about the dangers of distracted driving. This year, six students across the nation were honored for their innovative TV, radio, and billboard advertisements designed to educate peers about the risks of distracted driving, particularly involving cell phone use.
The scholarship competition garnered 2,728 submissions from students residing in all 50 states and Washington, D.C. The winning public service announcements (PSAs) will be showcased on a Clear Channel Outdoor digital billboard located in Times Square, New York City, on June 27, 2025.
In 2023, distracted driving was responsible for 3,275 fatalities and approximately 324,819 injuries, contributing to 8% of fatal crashes. This ongoing issue underscores the vital importance of initiatives like Project Yellow Light in spreading preventative messages.
The scholarship program receives sponsorship from Clear Channel Outdoor and Elephant Insurance, with additional support from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), iHeartMedia, and PIX 11. This competition is part of a broader effort by the Ad Council and NHTSA to promote safe driving habits across the nation.
The 2025 scholarships were awarded to Jaiden Mehta and Iliana Perry for billboard designs, Levi Bridge and Ben Michaels for radio spots, and Matilda Isobel and Victoria Pham for video productions. Their creative contributions highlight the power of peer-to-peer messaging in promoting road safety.
