Public advocates challenge the passing of LB 1402
On Saturday, hundreds of public advocates gathered at the State Capitol to challenge the passing of the LB 1402. The bill directs the state to use state tax dollars for private school scholarships.
Nebraska gov. Jim Pillen says it is a “huge step forward” in giving parents and students more choice. However, opponents have argued it will hurt public schools.
LB 1402 also eliminates the Opportunity Scholarships Act, a law passed last legislative session. That act provides tax incentives for donors of private and faith-based schools. A petition initiative, from the group “Support our Schools”, put a measure on the November ballot asking voters to repeal the Opportunity Scholarships Act.
“Inscribed on the north face of the State Capitol building are the words ‘The Salvation of the State is Watchfulness in the Citizen.’ We’ve been watching and we do not like what we’ve seen,” said Jenni Benson, Support Our Schools Nebraska. “We will fight back against the cowardly and cynical attempt to deny Nebraskans their right to vote.”
“Last summer, more than 117,000 Nebraskans signed the petition to let voters decide whether the state should use public funds to pay for private schools,” Benson said. “Voters in every one of Nebraska’s 93 counties signed that petition.”
