The Pungoteague Ruritan Club recently presented $2,000 scholarships to three Eastern Shore graduating seniors.
Receiving the scholarships were Camden Lewis of Nandua High School, Kayla Hicks of Northampton High School and Delaney Petkla of Broadwater Academy.
Lewis will be attending Old Dominion University and majoring in nursing. He was 6th out of 145 students at Nandua with a 4.24 GPA and captained the cross country, track and swim teams for the Warriors, holding several school records in swimming events. He was also a member of the Chess Club, president of the National Beta Club and a member of the Student Advisory Committee for Accomack schools. A certified lifeguard and CPR, Lewis said, “From a young age, I have always cared about the health and wellbeing of others.”
Kalya Hicks finished 13th out of 86 at Northampton High School and will be attending Longwood University to major in Speech Pathology, She recently won a Waste Watchers Contest from among 250 applicants with an essay on recycling and conversation. She was a cheerleader for the Jackets and a member of the choir and theater groups as well as being in the Interact Club and Honor Society. Kayla said, “I plan to return to the Shore after college and work with elementary school students to help with vocal and speech abilities.”
Delaney Petka earned almost all As at Broadwater Academy, which does not rank students, and will be attending James Madison University, majoring in theater. She is a member of the National Beta Club and a Virginia Girls State Delegate. She has won several school awards, including one for positive attitude, good sportsmanship, athletic and leadership qualities. She is active in theatre as an actor and director at school, the North Street Theatre and the Palace Theatre. She was the MVP of her cross country team and also was a long distance runner in track. Petka says, “I am passionate about using performance and communication to tell meaningful stories that inspire others and foster connection.”
The Bayside Poker Run, held jointly with the Onancock Rotary Club, is the primary fundraiser for scholarships for local students in addition to supporting numerous Eastern Shore nonprofit organizations.
