GOSHEN — The Purdue Club and Foundation of Elkhart and LaGrange Counties celebrated a record-breaking year of scholarship awards with a special dessert reception on Wednesday, June 4 at Faith Lutheran Church in Goshen.
A total of 37 scholarships, amounting to $57,250, were awarded to incoming and returning Purdue University students from Elkhart and LaGrange counties, marking the highest total distributed in the club’s history. The event drew 92 attendees, including recipients, their families, and club members.
The club began awarding scholarships in 2002, and this year’s awards bring the total number of scholarships granted to 655, totaling $627,250 since the program’s inception.
Scholarships for incoming freshmen, who each received $750, were awarded to students from area high schools including Northridge, Fairfield, Elkhart, Goshen, Concord, Jimtown, and NorthWood. All other recipients are returning Purdue students, whose scholarships range from $1,000 to $6,000.
The scholarship committee is comprised of five Purdue alumni or dedicated supporters who carefully review each application. Students must live in Elkhart or LaGrange counties and reapply each year after Jan. 1.
In addition to donations, the Foundation raises scholarship funds through various community activities and maintains a Legacy Donor list, with five funds held through the Elkhart County Community Foundation.
The Purdue Club of Elkhart County, established in 2000, operates two boards: a Club Board for social events and a Foundation Board, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that manages scholarship and fundraising efforts.
Scholarship winners recognized at the dessert who were unable to attend were Alix Kehr, Brandon Ulloa, Grace Caffee, Drew Stahly, Lauren Trim, Kylee Brown, Kirsten Schrock, Zachary Grindle, Bianca Helfrich, Adrienne Lehman, Yasmine Adame and Gabriella Reyes.
