Purdue juniors awarded prestigious 2025 Goldwater Scholarships for excellence in research – Purdue University

Purdue University juniors Deniz Eksioglu and Christina Sowinski have been offered 2025 Barry Goldwater Scholarships.
This award is the nation’s premier scholarship for undergraduates studying the natural sciences, engineering and mathematics.
The recognition comes from the Barry Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation. This coveted award offers up to $7,500 toward tuition and fees to sophomores and juniors. The goal of the Goldwater Scholarship is to provide a continuing source of highly qualified scientists, mathematicians and engineers wishing to pursue research careers in these fields.
Eksioglu, a biomedical engineering major in the College of Engineering , is working with professor Hugh Lee to study biocompatible neural-stimulating devices coated with a conductive polymer.
Sowinski, a double major in planetary science and geology and geophysics in the College of Science , was part of a research team with Ali Bramson, assistant professor of planetary sciences, and analyzed erosional features on Mars. Their findings have been submitted to the Journal of Geophysical Research: Planets and are currently under revision.
Both Eksioglu and Sowinski are also members of Purdue’s John Martinson Honors College . This recognition marks a significant step in their academic careers and highlights their dedication to advancing knowledge and solving complex challenges.
