ALBEMARLE COUNTY, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) — The Albemarle-Charlottesville NAACP Branch has recognized three Piedmont Virginia Community College students.
The students, Fatema Mohammad, Kimberly de la Cruz and Owen Brown, have been selected as the 2024 recipients of the Tamyra K. Turner Memorial Scholarships.
According to a release, Brown and Mohammad each received $1,000 awards and de la Cruz got a $1,500 award.
“We are honored to partner with members of the Albemarle Charlottesville NAACP Branch and the Turner family to help students at PVCC,” said Harry Stillerman, PVCC’s Vice President for Institutional Advancement and Development. “This scholarship will ensure that students can fully pursue their educational and career goals without financial stress and will open doors to opportunities they might not have otherwise had.”
Mohammad is a first-year student at PVCC and comes from a first-generation immigrant household.
“I quickly came to admire how people in social fields can help others in all walks of life. This, along with my active interest in the humanities, really inspired me to go into the field, which led me to Liberal Arts,” she said. “This scholarship will help me a lot, as I will be able to focus primarily on my schoolwork without the financial burdens that come with college.”
Brown and de la Cruz both also noted that the awards removed barriers to their education.
“We extend our deepest gratitude to the Albemarle Charlottesville Branch of the NAACP and members of the Turner family for honoring the legacy of a remarkable individual who deeply believed in the potential of her students. Her dedication and commitment to teaching and learning continues to inspire and impact the lives of PVCC students,” said PVCC President Jean Runyon.
The scholarships are awarded to PVCC students who are enrolled in Liberal Arts or General Studies programs each year.
They are named for Tamyra Kaye Turner, a former English Literature professor at PVCC who was heavily involved in the community.
She was an active member of the local NAACP branch, served on the Charlottesville School Board in the mid-90s and was a board member at the Jefferson-Madison Regional Library in the mid-2010s.
Turner was also involved at the Jefferson School African American Heritage Center, the Virginia Festival of the Book and Charlottesville’s Juneteenth Celebration, which she helped found.
