ANDOVER – On Tuesday, May 20, students at Pymatuning Valley High School were recognized for academic achievement and scholarship awards during the district’s annual Academic Achievement Awards Night.
The event included the return of a long-standing tradition: recognizing 4.0 GPA students and Academic Letter recipients during the evening program.
PVHS Principal Mark Mollohan welcomed students and families before presenting the Most Improved Student Award to senior Gary Ishman.
“The evening is always an exciting time for me,” Awards Night Coordinator Helen Cortright said. “I enjoy talking with the presenters, meeting the families and watching the surprised looks on the recipients’ faces. I am thrilled to help recognize the students for their academic success.”
The 4.0 Club students receive a pin in their first year, followed by yearly pins denoting continued membership. Academic Letter recipients receive a chenille letter the first year and a Lamp of Knowledge pin each year after. Names of 4.0 honorees also appear on banners displayed in the school’s main hallway.
“This year Mr. Mollohan brought back the recognition of our 4.0 and Academic Letter recipients to our evening event,” Cortright said. “Each recipient received a formal invitation to the event and the surprise of what they were receiving was revealed that night.”
Seniors also received scholarships during the program, many funded by local donors, organizations and memorial foundations. Cortright credited PV’s guidance office, Scott Brown and ACCESS advisor Debra Kingzett for helping students through the application process.
“It is our goal to surprise the seniors with the scholarship(s) they are receiving that evening, but some are already aware of the scholarship(s) that they will receive,” Cortright said. “We are thankful for the community support for our students and always look forward to seeing the community members that take time to come to our event to recognize the academic achievements of our students.”
Among this year’s top scholarship recipients were Austin Dean and Abigail Miller, each recognized by multiple organizations including the Gold Pride, Marvin and Meddock scholarships.
The evening also honored underclassmen with 4.0 and Academic Letter distinctions, with an asterisk noting students who earned both.
According to Cortright, 4.0 awards go to students who earn a 4.0 GPA in any of the first three grading periods, while Academic Letters are awarded to those with a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher across the same timeframe.
The awards night served as a culmination of the school year’s academic efforts and a reminder of the community’s support for its students’ future success.
