More Quad-Cities area students have earned scholarships toward their various post-secondary pathways, ranging from aerospace engineering to the skilled trades.
Midwest Technical Institute (MTI) announced its 2024 High School Scholarship Program winners Thursday, including the following two Quad-Cities area students:
This year, MTI awarded a total of 84 scholarships — totaling nearly $300,000 — in support of high school seniors’ pursuit of the skilled trades.
On Wednesday, the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) announced its first wave of 2024 College-Sponsored Merit Scholarships, including the following two local students:
College-Sponsored Merit Scholarships each range between $500 and $2,000, awarded annually for up to four years of a recipient’s undergraduate studies. Per a NMSC press release, Nels plans to pursue oncology, and Farmer intends to study computer engineering.
Two additional area students earned scholarships from the Hoover Presidential Foundation’s Uncommon Student Award program:
This program, for Iowa high school juniors, awards 15 finalists each year with $1,500 for designing and completing a public service or community-minded project. Four of these finalists can earn an additional $10,000 scholarship each.
Another Bettendorf student, incoming senior William Brown, is set to receive a $1,000 scholarship at next year’s Quad Cities Engineering and Science Council (QCESC) Celebration after earning the title of “High Individual” for all three of the annual QCESC High School Contests: bridge-building, trebuchet and cardboard boat regatta.
Ryan Sondgeroth, a recent Pleasant Valley High School graduate, received a $1,000 scholarship from Mediacom’s World Class Scholarship Program, for excellence in leadership and academics. Each year, Mediacom selects 60 graduating seniors — living in company service areas — to receive these scholarships for post-secondary education expenses.

Another recent grad, Sam Bevans of Davenport Central High School, won the 2024 Thomas K. Evans Memorial Scholarship from the Davenport-based manufacturer, American Power Systems, Inc. (APS.)

This one-time, $5,000 scholarship is given to new college entrants pursuing a degree in science, technology, engineering and math, based on both merit and need. Bevans plans pursue aerospace engineering at Iowa State University this fall, according to an APS press release.
