Jamaican-born England international Raheem Sterling has reiterated his commitment to empowering young people through education and opportunity as he unveiled a scholarship initiative aimed at students from underrepresented backgrounds in the United Kingdom.
The scholarship, a collaboration between The Raheem Sterling Foundation and the University Campus of Football Business (UCFB), targets students from Black, African, and Caribbean heritage in Greater London and Greater Manchester who come from socio-economically underrepresented backgrounds. It aims to close the attainment gap for Black British students, promote equal access to higher education, and enhance diversity within the sports industry.
“Education and social mobility are at the heart of what the Raheem Sterling Foundation stands for,” Sterling said.
“I’m excited to be working with UCFB to provide scholarships for students from Manchester and London and to launch the third year of the Broadcast Academy in Wembley. Together, we’re empowering young people to build meaningful careers within the sports and media industries,” he added.
The initiative includes two fully funded scholarships for undergraduate students at UCFB’s Wembley and Manchester campuses, set to be awarded for the 2025 academic year. Applications open in January 2025 via the UCFB website.
Additionally, the Raheem Sterling Foundation Broadcast Academy in London will be based at UCFB’s Wembley campus, providing a cutting-edge environment where students passionate about sports broadcasting can develop practical skills, gain hands-on experience, and learn from industry experts. That execution will be done in collaboration with talkSPORT
The Broadcast Academy, now entering its third cohort in 2025, offers participants a dynamic training programme designed to replicate the fast-paced world of professional sports media.
Brendan Flood, Chairman and Founder of UCFB, emphasized the shared vision between UCFB and The Raheem Sterling Foundation.
“Through this partnership with The Raheem Sterling Foundation, we’re committed to breaking down barriers and creating accessible pathways for young talent in sports and media,” Flood said.
“These scholarships and the Broadcast Academy underscore UCFB’s dedication to ensuring that talented individuals from diverse backgrounds have the support and resources they need to succeed,” he declared.
