Local students Victoria Garcia Branch and Maria Valenzuela are recipients of 2025 National Rainbow College Fund scholarships.
Valenzuela attends College of the Redwoods and Garcia Branch goes to Cal Poly Humboldt.
This year, the National Rainbow College Fund awarded $350,000 in educational funding to 140 LGBTQ+ and other students across California.
A National Rainbow College Fund press release says, “This represents a nearly three-fold increase from 2024, when NRCF awarded scholarships to 50 recipients, demonstrating the program’s rapid expansion and growing impact in supporting LGBTQ+ students and allies across California.”
The NRCF scholarship is open to LGBTQ+ and other individuals who are high school seniors, incoming and current college or university students, current community college students and adult re-entry students. The scholarship program evaluates candidates based on multiple criteria, including academic merit, extracurricular activities, community involvement, personal narrative and financial need.
Recipients will use their awards for the upcoming academic year, with funds applied directly toward tuition, fees, books and other educational expenses.
