The deadline for the Izan Wheeler Youth Sports Scholarship, on April 1, is fast approaching, announces Ramps and Alleys.
Izan Wheeler was a scooter and BMX bike rider who lived in Salida. He was introduced to the worlds of roller skating and skateboarding at Ramps and Alleys in Salida, and introduced others to the sports more familiar to him. Wheeler passed away in December 2023, at 19 years old.
Ramps and Alleys and the Ark Valley High Rollers established this scholarship in honor of Wheeler’s generosity and passion for youth sports. The funds can be used for any sport, organized or personal; and for just about anything, including camps, gear, participation or competition fees, and more. The amount varies from award to award.
Applicants may only apply once per year (spring/summer or fall/winter). Recipients must be between 12 and 18 years old at the deadline. They must be a resident of Chaffee or Saguache county, or residing in Swissvale, Howard, Coaldale, Cotopaxi, or in between.
Last season’s winners were Salida High School senior Kendra Johnson for golf, and sophomore Grayson Brown for cross country.
The application can be found here. Any questions can be directed to Stacy Falk at 719-539-5468 or cibarkvalley@gmail.com.
