Champions of Youth Ambitions (C’YA) is pleased to announce the winners of the 2025 Mikey Aslam Scholarship. Aslam was a Los Alamos High School (LAHS) graduate and Eagle Scout who passed away while at college.
His family selected three winners for 2025:
Aslam’s parents, Kim and Tariq Aslam had kind words to say about all the applicants and were asked to share thoughts about each winner.
The three recipients expressed what the scholarship means to them:
Chen said, “I’m honored and thrilled to receive this scholarship—recognition that the service work I’ve poured myself into these past four years truly matters and motivates me to keep giving back. Thank you for believing in me. I look forward to updating you on my projects—and I hope to inspire others just as I’ve been inspired by Mr. Mikey Aslam’s legacy.”
He will be going to Rice University to study Electrical and Computer Engineering, and is excited to develop affordable assistive technologies that could help people from all aspects of life live more safely and efficiently.
Dunwoody spoke about his award, saying, “I am incredibly excited to win this scholarship. I hope to go to college at New Mexico State University, and I plan to major in computer engineering. I couldn’t have done any of this without the help of my mom. She helped me so much throughout my entire life and is continuing to do so.”
Sayre shared his thoughts, saying, “I was very excited to win one of the scholarships. I immediately called my parents and my grandparents to tell them the good news. I hope to study abroad in Spain. I plan to attend Universidad de Rey Juan Carlos in Madrid, majoring in Hospitality and Tourism Management. I would like to continue living internationally and work in the hospitality industry.”
The young scholars will be recognized at 6:30 p.m. Monday, May 19, during the Scholarship Ceremony at Los Alamos High School. Tariq Aslam will be presenting the awards.
“We hope the scholarships will help these well-deserving students continue their quest to further their education and their pursuit of helping others,” the Aslam family said.
