The Red Bluff Garden Club/Lorna Bonham Memorial Scholarship Committee recently announced the 2024 Garden Club high school scholarship recipients. Seven senior scholarships were awarded: four to Red Bluff Union High School, two to Corning, and one to Los Molinos. The recipients are all pursuing fields related to horticulture or related environmental sciences.
The scholarship is in memory of Lorna Bonham, a long-time member of our club and advocate for students and gardening. She passed away in 2015.
Alexandra Hurst received $1,500. She is the daughter of Jennifer Hurst and plans to attend Treasure Valley Community College, Silver Hawk Aviation Academy, and Boise State, majoring in business management and earning her pilot’s license.
“I will get experience flying for the forest service, firefighters, farmers and Fish and Game and will be able to help farmers optimize crop yields by applying pesticides and fertilizers, assist in reforestation efforts, monitor tree health and combat wildfires through aerial firefighting.” She participated in varsity soccer, swimming, snowboard racing, and JV track.
Jordan Brandt is the daughter of Kathy and James Brant. She plans to attend the University of Florida Or Texas A&M and major in agricultural business.
“I have grown up on a farm growing and selling fresh fruits and vegetables since I was tall enough to see over the counter.” She has maintained a 4.45 GPA while being a three-sport athlete, vice president of the National Honor Society, a two-year NASA intern, and working on the family farm. Jordan received $1,500.
Kristin Ochoa received $1,000 and plans to attend Cal Poly or CSUC, Chico. She will study crop and dairy science. Kristin participated in FFA Advanced Floral, FFA Vet Tech, Ballet Folklorico, and Society Of Latinos Empowering Students (S.O.L.E.S). She is the daughter of Rosy Ochoa.
“Our natural resources are diminishing and it is important to find new ways to manage our cattle and Crop Productions while also conserving our resources like land and water.”
Jolene Junge, daughter of Anne and Eric Junge, received $1,000 to attend Shasta College and pursue a career in natural resources or forestry.
She participated in 4-H and FFA as Tehama County 4-H Ambassador and placed second in FFA Forestry Team competition.
“I’d like to do something in agriculture or natural resources as a career. Being a leader in my community and my passion for the environment has become my focus. ”
Gabriel Esparza received $1,500. He is the son of Christian and Patricia Esparza and plans on attending the University of California Davis, majoring in agronomy and agricultural business.. “I hope to grow my own agave farm and produce my own products derived from agave.” He was Corning HS chapter vice president in FFA (earned his Green Hand certificate and State degree), vice president of the student body, and participated in football, track and field, and cross country.
Hayley Byrd is the daughter of Ty and Regina Byrd. She plans on attending Kansas State University to pursue a degree in agricultural communications. “I want to educate the public and promote agriculture’s many benefits.” Besides being a member of the El Camino 4-H club and the Corning FFA chapter, Haley has spent time on the family ranch and has shown sheep at the State Fair, the Cow Palace, and the California Youth Ag Expo. She has also shown dairy heifers and served as California District 3 Dairy Princess. Hayley received $1000.
Emily Reid, the daughter of Travis Reid, received $1,500 and plans to attend Utah State University. She will pursue a career in agribusiness and floriculture. Emily participated in Los Molinos FFA while maintaining a 4.07 GPA.
“I plan to be a floral business owner and Floral Design High School teacher. I love designing floral arrangements and succulent gardens.” School activities included serving as FFA president and receiving California Scholarship Federation lifetime membership.
The Red Bluff Garden Club is over 50 years old and provides many community projects, programs, and events. Meetings are held at the Fellowship Hall, Methodist Church, 525 David Ave., Red Bluff, on the last Tuesday of each month, often featuring guest speakers or special projects.
