ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The Rochester Red Wings hosted a special night at the ballpark, honoring 10 local students with scholarships. The scholarships recognized the students’ hard work for the team and their community spirit.
Red Wings President and CEO Naomi Silver says she wanted to show appreciation for those that work at the ballpark.
“Being able to do something like this to help these students is really very meaningful to us,” she said.
Ava Schnoor, a Junior at RIT, worked as a social media intern for the team. She told News10NBC it’s an honor to be a recipient.
“It’s a culmination of what we’ve done together, with my work with the organization and being able to come here everyday and contribute to the story of this organization and build on some great work that we’ve done here,” Schnoor said.
Liam Hoffmann, a senior at SUNY Brockport, was excited to be an intern for a team he grew up watching.
“I’ve been coming to Red Wings games my entire life and went to school because I love sports,” he said. “And then to get the chance to work in sports this whole summer, learn so much, and then come back and receive this award, it just means everything. It’s really exciting.”
Morrie Silver, Director of Innovation for the Wings, says the team is especially proud to have relationships with students who come back for careers after graduation.
“It’s great to see some familiar faces that start their journey before they go to college and then throughout their college career, and then can build a career with us,” he said. “I think that’s one of the things we’re most proud about.”
While some recipients couldn’t attend in person, their photos were displayed at the stadium.
Fans have a few last chances to catch a game at Innovative Field before the end of the season. The Wings play the Buffalo Bisons at 6:05 p.m. on Saturday and 1:05 p.m. on Sunday.
