After completing the 2024 scholarship ceremonies at the Evergreen and Battle Ground school districts high schools, 53 high school athletes received a total of $23,000 Rego athletic scholarships.
Kristen Parkin, who works for Rego Athletic Scholarship, said a new addition for 2024 was the Prairie High School.
The Rego Scholarship was started to honor a Union High School football coach who resided in Battle Ground for over 20 years. Coach Mark Rego died in October of 2018 during Union’s perfect football season where it captured its first state championship in school history. Rego had tongue cancer, although he never used substances often linked to the disease, Parkin said in a previous 2023 article.
“He believed in giving back. He believed in education, academics and helping people win at life,” Parkin said in the 2023 article. “He came from a great family and was a great, quality guy.”
In order to receive scholarship funding, student athletes must complete an application form, a personal statement and an essay. They must also submit two references.
Eligible students must have participated in high school athletics but are not required to play sports beyond high school to receive a scholarship.
Selected student athletes received between $300 and $1,500 for their educational future along with a gift bag from IQ Credit Union.
On June 22, the scholarship fund will host a fundraiser golf tournament at the Tri-Mountain Golf Course in Ridgefield.
