Grants and Resources for Sustainability
Deadline: 2-February-2026
The Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council is inviting applications for its Connection Grants Program to support events and outreach activities geared toward short-term, targeted knowledge mobilization initiatives that enable the exchange of knowledge and engagement with participants on research issues they value.
Connection Grants support events and outreach activities that promote interdisciplinary, intersectoral, and international exchanges among researchers, students, and partners from academic and non-academic sectors in the social sciences and humanities.
Connection Grants for events are valued between $10,000 and $25,000, while those supporting outreach activities range from $10,000 to $50,000 over one year. For outreach activities only, SSHRC may consider higher amounts if sufficient justification and evidence of timely fund management are provided.
Eligible contributions include both cash and in-kind support that directly aid in achieving project objectives. Cash contributions align with the Tri-agency Guide on Financial Administration and may cover expenses for direct research-related costs. In-kind contributions can include essential nonmonetary resources, such as donated services, access to equipment, or the participation of experts from partner organizations.
Grant funds cannot be used to remunerate team members, including postdoctoral fellows, except in specific cases involving Indigenous participants. Funds cannot cover salaries, stipends, or course release time but can be used for consulting fees and professional services that directly support project activities.
Projects must align with SSHRC’s subject matter eligibility, focusing on knowledge mobilization rather than conducting new research. Events are typically short-term, such as conferences or workshops, while outreach activities engage the public through various means, including documentaries, media presentations, policy briefs, public debates, artistic exhibits, and interactive digital tools.
All activities must produce tangible outcomes such as proceedings or digital knowledge products within twelve months. Projects conducted abroad must demonstrate the potential to mobilize Canadian research internationally and justify the need for an overseas venue.
Sources of eligible contributions include host institutions, academic and research organizations, philanthropic foundations, government departments, the private sector, and community-based organizations.
Only Canadian institutions holding institutional eligibility can administer the funds, although intellectual leadership and governance may come from within the research or not-for-profit sectors.
Participants and audiences for both events and outreach activities can include academic and non-academic researchers, policy-makers, professional practitioners, representatives from public, private or not-for-profit sectors, community-based organizations, and students at all levels.
Applications can be submitted by institutions or by individuals and teams. Institutional applicants must hold SSHRC institutional eligibility, and the project director must be affiliated with the host institution.
Individual applicants must be affiliated with a Canadian postsecondary institution at the time of application and play a significant role in organizing the event or outreach activity. Postdoctoral researchers may apply if they establish and maintain affiliation with an eligible institution within three months of the grant start date.
Only eligible Canadian postsecondary institutions or not-for-profit organizations may administer funds, and those seeking institutional eligibility must contact SSHRC’s Institutional Eligibility team at least 10 business days before the application deadline. Co-applicants may include individuals affiliated with Canadian or international postsecondary institutions, not-for-profit organizations, philanthropic foundations, or government bodies.
Collaborators may come from any background and need not be affiliated with an eligible institution. Applicants can apply for only one Connection Grant per calendar year, and project directors cannot hold more than one Connection Grant for the same event or activity.
Students cannot apply as applicants or co-applicants but may participate as collaborators without receiving stipends from the grant. Federal scientists affiliated with Canadian institutions must show that their project is unrelated to their employer’s mandate or normal duties.
Applications are evaluated based on three criteria: Challenge, Feasibility and Capability. Challenge assesses the originality, significance, and contribution to knowledge mobilization, quality of research, and potential for impact.
Feasibility examines the appropriateness of the timeline, budget, and additional resources. Capability evaluates the expertise, experience, and previous contributions of the applicant and team members, including mentoring and training of students and researchers.
