WEIRTON — President Debra Marino welcomed 42 members of the Hancock County Association of Retired School Employees and guests in attendance to the club’s monthly meeting at Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Chester.
Marino began the meeting by explaining the agenda, provided the blessing prior to the meal and thanked the Women’s Guild of Sacred Heart Church for preparing the afternoon luncheon.
When the meeting resumed, two area high school graduates were awarded scholarships toward their continuing education.
Nicole Loprete of Weir High School and Kameron Rosak of Oak Glen High were introduced as this year’s scholarship recipients.
Officials presented each student with their scholarship check.
Also during the meeting, Rita Orler was installed as incoming treasurer.
Secretary Liz Pugh read the minutes from the April meeting.
Orler provided the financial report, after which Service Chairman Michael Robinson reported on September’s upcoming project, the Hancock County Animal Shelter.
Robinson reminded those in attendance books are still being traded and collected for the group’s sharing library. It was then announced members’ volunteer hours, along with birthday money, are due in September.
Orler, serving in the capacity of membership chair, reported to those in attendance the club’s newsletter requires everyone to provide their e-mail regarding the distribution of news and opinions.
Orler, who also serves as information and protective services chairman, along with Melanie Donofe, presented a memorial service for the members of the Retired School Employees who died this year. She later announced the new proposed budget, which passed following a vote.
Marino presented the venues and speakers the group is interested in asking to its fall and spring meetings. A written survey of the speakers will be completed and compiled by the president and group officers, it was stated.
An additional scholarship was proposed, with the motion passing.
Marino announced three representatives in addition to herself, traveled to Charleston for the WVARSE state meeting, including Earlean Jones, Orler and Rosalie Lebec.
Winners of door prizes and a drawing were announced, after which the president invited all personnel to attend numerous upcoming activities.
The next meeting will be held at noon Sept. 17 at the Immaculate Conception Church in New Cumberland.
The meeting adjourned by reminding members to “be happy and enjoy the summer.”
