Two Richland One seniors were awarded $1,000 scholarships from the Columbia chapter of the National Coalition of 100 Black Women. The non-profit organization is dedicated to empowering black women and girls in the areas of health, education, economic empowerment, and public advocacy. Ameerah Collins of Richland One Middle College and Kassandra McFadden of Columbia High School were two of six scholarship recipients, which is meant to encourage African-American females to continue their education after high school.

The students were recognized during the organization’s 2024 Sheroes Scholarships and Awards Luncheon April 13 at the Brookland Banquet and Conference Center in West Columbia.
“This scholarship really aligns with my morals and values. It really means a lot to me. Applying for scholarships like this one is very empowering to me,” said Ameerah.
After graduating in May, Ameerah will attend Hampton University in Virginia, where she will enroll in the school’s five-year Master of Business Administration (MBA) program. Kassandra will attend the University of South Carolina Upstate after graduation. She plans to major in psychology and minor in child advocacy studies.
“It was a shock to hear that I got this scholarship. This scholarship means that someone is taking a chance on me because it’s not every day that someone will give you an opportunity or invest in your future,” said Kassandra.
