The annual Scholarship Night celebration at Rim of the World High School on May 19 spotlighted the accomplishments of local high school seniors and the generosity of local organizations, businesses, and individuals. A total of 85 seniors were recognized and 52 awards given by the Rim of the World Scholarship Council. A grand total of 172 scholarships were awarded, totaling $154,250. Principal Brian Willemse, ROWUSD School Board Trustee Cindy Gardner, and various community members and representatives of organizations came to the microphone on the stage of the Performing Arts Center to recognize students and present them with certificates of commendation for their accomplishments, along with monetary awards and scholarships.
Principle Willemse and Trustee Gardner exemplified the community spirit and warmth of the event by reminding award recipients to pause, face the audience, and smile for their parents and other photographers present at the event. When large groups were spread across the stage and a shorter person was in the back row, presenters noticed—and insisted the shorter student trade places with a taller student so no one would be left out of a photograph.
Besides the recognition of organizations, memorial scholarships were also given in the name of individuals and local businesses. The Rim of the World Communities Scholarship Council provided a two-page list of memorial scholarships, those provided by local businesses, and the names of others who made contributions. “Each of our ROWCSC scholarship applicants were personally interviewed by a panel of community volunteers and their applications were thoroughly read and ranked by a team of community volunteers,” the council program stated, adding “Thank you to our wonderful Community Volunteers.”
Polly Sauer, representing the Women’s Club of Lake Arrowhead, noted that the organization would be celebrating its 100th birthday in January 2026. She thanked the girls with whom she has been working on Tuesdays to digitize the archives of the organization in preparation for celebrating the centennial.
Scholarships and monetary awards were given by organizations, churches, firefighters, individuals, and in memoriam. The ROWCSC (Rim of the World Communities Scholarship Council), as noted on their website (rimscholarship.com), “consists of dedicated council members and volunteers who are committed, as our mission clearly states, ‘To provide financial assistance and encouragement for our high school students wishing to continue their education and training beyond graduation in the name of the Rim of the World communities.’
The Council was formed in 1957, the year Rim of the World High School celebrated its first graduation. Through the efforts of many volunteers and countless hours over the years the Council is still providing scholarships to graduates in Rim of the World Unified School District.” Rim High is pushing toward 70 years of graduating seniors, and the spirit and pride that accompanied Scholarship Night should carry on the tradition that was launched with the first graduating class.
