A recent Riverdale Ridge High School grad was awarded one of a handful of national scholarships from the Kaylee Scholarship Association, one of the nation’s leading organizers of high school sporting events.
Tanner Lothrop, who played football and ran track for the Ravens, received a $2,250 scholarship from KSA for “showing what leadership, resilience and growth through sport truly look like.”
Wayne Voorhees, the head football coach at Riverdale Ridge, sent Lothrop the details, and he promptly applied, writing essays about what KSA has done for him and his high school sports experience.
“They provided insane opportunities for me and my team to go and travel the world playing the game that we love,” Lothrop said. “I got to go to New York City and Florida through them just to play some football and just experience it which is crazy because a lot of people want to go to those places throughout their lifetime and I’ve gotten to do them at like such a young age, just because of like the opportunity that KSA provided for me and my team.”
Lothrop played defensive back for the Ravens (mostly free safety).
He’s seen the program continue to grow and said Riverdale Ridge was the ideal place for him to grow as a student and athlete.
“It’s got a lot of good guys. Our coaches are really experienced,” he said. “I think as a program, we really just been able to build up a strong sense of community. And it has developed in terms of growing a program starting in 3A and 4A. We’ve always been trained as a 5A program, so I think that puts us ahead in terms of how we act as a team together and the way we look into game days and things like that.”
Up next for Lothrop is Colorado State University, where he’ll study mechanical engineering.
Though he’ll mainly focus on academics, he said he’s not ruling out a chance to continue playing sports, either intramurals or perhaps even a walk-on spot.
Voorhees said it’s been a pleasure coaching Lothrop, and he wishes him the best going forward.
“I’m proud of Tanner and the young man he has become. He is a great kid,” Voorhees said.
