ROCKY RIVER, Ohio – In a remarkable achievement for Rocky River High School, seniors Colin Alber and Beatrix Stickney have been named National Merit Finalists in the 70th Annual National Merit Scholarship Program. This prestigious recognition highlights their exceptional academic dedication and performance.
Colin and Beatrix were initially named semifinalists in September, and they have since met all the necessary criteria to advance to finalist status.
The National Merit Scholarship Program annually honors high school students across the United States who demonstrate significant academic achievement. Out of approximately 1.5 million students who enter the program each year, only about 15,000 are named finalists, placing Colin and Beatrix among the top one percent of high school seniors nationwide.
These finalists will now compete for nearly 7,500 National Merit Scholarships, which total approximately $30 million.
In a recent interview, Colin Alber shared his thoughts on being named a National Merit Finalist. “It’s pretty cool to be recognized,” he said, reflecting on the honor. Alber is also a U.S. Presidential Scholar Candidate.
Colin has a keen interest in physics and math and is keeping his options open for college next year. He also mentioned his participation in the Academic Challenge team, where he enjoys the high-pressure environment and the fun of trivia questions. Last year, the team even made an appearance on Channel 5, showcasing their collective knowledge.
Beatrix Stickney expressed her pride in being recognized for her hard work. “It’s nice to get recognition for what I’ve done,” she said, emphasizing the intrinsic motivation that drives her academic success.
Beatrix plans to attend Carleton College next year, where she hopes to explore her passions for both biology and English. She is actively involved in various extracurricular activities, including Science Olympiad and the marching band, and has even contributed her talents to creating costumes for the school musical.
The achievements of Colin and Beatrix not only reflect their individual dedication but also highlight the supportive academic environment at Rocky River High School. As they prepare for the next chapter in their educational journeys, both students are excited about the opportunities that lie ahead.
The Rocky River community is proud of Colin and Beatrix for their outstanding accomplishments and wishes them the best of luck as they compete for National Merit Scholarships. Their hard work and commitment to excellence serve as an inspiration to their peers and a testament to the high standards of the school.
