Sterling Rotary Club awarded scholarships to nearly a dozen Logan County high school graduates recently.
Six students received scholarships to attend Northeastern Junior College and five others were awarded Marcia Luce Memorial Scholarships.
The NJC awardees, their schools and majors are:
Clinton Rockwell, Caliche, Wind and Electrical Tech;
Samuel Emmerson, Sterling, Production Ag;
Peter Brekel, Fleming, Ag Diesel Mechanics;
Jordan Gerk, Caliche, Agri-business;
Veronica Baray, Merino, Special Education;
Ayden Gandee, Sterling, Auto Tech.
The Luce Scholarships went to:
Kendyll Armstrong, Caliche, University of Northern Colorado, Nursing;
Braylon Bruns, Caliche, Colorado State University, Ag Education;
Taylor Simants, Sterling, Creighton University, Nursing;
Tyla Thomas, Sterling, Butler Community College (Kansas), Ag Business
Jaden Martinez, Sterling, Colorado Mesa University, Business Management.
The Luce Scholarships are named after Sterling native and long-time educator Marcia Luce, who served the RE-1 Valley School District and the Sterling community in many ways throughout her adult life. She was the first woman to join the Sterling Rotary Club and, two years later, became its first woman president.
