ESCANABA — The Rotary Club of Escanaba awarded four scholarships to 2024 high school graduates from Delta County at its annual dinner meeting, held on June 25 at the Highland Golf Club. Additionally, the Rotary Trust Board, an organization committed to serving children with special needs, awarded three scholarships to 2024 high school graduates of Delta County.
“p1″>The scholarships awarded by the Club are for $1,000 in the student’s first year of their post high school education. The scholarship recipients were chosen based on their essays written about Rotary Club’s motto “Service Above Self.” Recipients of the annual High School $1,000 scholarship were Zowie Bozzo (Bark River-Harris High School), Leia Economopolous (Escanaba High School), Evelyn Norman (Escanaba High School), and Zoe Wilson (Escanaba High School).
A $6,000 scholarship was awarded to Adela Kang (Escanaba High School). Kang, already enrolled at the University of Michigan, is the recipient of the 6th annual Leon Kinasiewicz, M.D., Scholarship. Kinasiewicz is a retired board-certified radiologist, past president of Rotary and an emeritus member of the Club’s Trust Board. This scholarship award is presented to an outstanding senior who plans to enter the medical field and has overcome some kind of adversity.
Two new scholarships were offered by the Rotary Trust Board this year. The first is for a graduating senior from any Delta County High School who has a current Individualized Education Plan and is pursuing further education. This year’s recipient is Kayla Hamelin (Gladstone High School) who plans to pursue a degree in accounting and will be attending Bay de Noc Community College.
The second new scholarship was awarded to Bradly VanDamme (Mid-Peninsula High School). This scholarship is designed for a graduating senior from any Delta County High School who is planning to pursue an associate, bachelor’s degree, or master’s degree and will focus their career on working with special needs students. VanDamme is planning to begin his further education at Bay de Noc Community College and eventually transfer to Northern Michigan University where he plans to major in Special Education.
