As a result of successful fundraising this year, the Rotary Club of Smith Mountain Lake has awarded six scholarships to local high school students.
This year, the Rotary Club Scholarship Committee received 15 applications with the majority coming from Franklin County High School. Eleven of the applicants were from young women and four from young men. Grade Point Averages (GPA) ranged from 3.4 to 4.5. Each application was reviewed by the Scholarship Committee and evaluated on overall academic achievement, career goals, high school and community activities, work experience and financial need.
Each student was awarded $1,500 towards their tuition for next year. Five of the scholarships were funded by fundraisers conducted by the Rotary Club throughout the year, and the sixth – the Dick Kenyon Memorial Scholarship – was donated by two anonymous donors in Kenyon’s honor.
The scholarships recipients from Franklin County High School include: Jace Bernard, who plans to attend the University of Virginia; Cora Houston, who plans to attend Virginia Tech; Moriah Quesenberry, who also plans to attend Virginia Tech; and Olivia Chitwood, who plans to attend Eckerd College.
From Staunton River High School, London Sink received a scholarship and plans to attend the University of Lynchburg.
Anna Locklear, who homeschooled, received the Dick Kenyon Memorial Scholarship and will attend Belmont College.
The students were honored at a luncheon at Hot Shots Bar & Grill on Thursday, June 20th with their families.
