Emilia Rotstan, an 11-year-old violinist, has won the $500 first-place award in the annual Cherrington Merit Scholarship competition.
Judges Marcy Stamper, Michael Brady and Murray Sampson gathered on March 7 to hear the applicants for the 2025 competition, organized this year by Emily Nelson.
Ace Rickabaugh, 11, a guitarist, won the second-place $300 award, and Baker Smith, 17, a pianist, won the third-place $100 award.
As part of the competition, the winner is invited to play a piece in the Cascadia Spring Concert, May 9 and 10, at 7 p.m. in the Methow Valley Community Center. Admission is by donation. Rotstan will play a Bach piece in the concert.
The Cherrington Scholarship is awarded to the outstanding music student of the year determined by a live performance. The scholarship has been awarded annually since 2013.
