The Sabinal Independent School District girls’ athletics department and coaches after cleaning up 430 pounds of trash May 21 at Chalk Bluff on the Nueces River.
Sabinal High School seniors earned a variety of scholarships during a ceremony on May 15, celebrating their hard work and future plans.
Ann Keath presented the M. E. (Butch) Keath Scholarships to Eilee Cavasos and Ezekiel Llanes.
Patsy Gomez, representing the Sabinal Lions Club, honored Eilee Cavasos for winning the Diabetes Awareness Essay and presented Kyndra Dehoyos-Hernandez with the Lions Club Drug Awareness Scholarship. Araceli Ramirez earned the Young Woman’s Scholarship as the District 2-A2 Lions Club Queen. Kyndra Dehoyos-Hernandez also secured the Association for Migrant Educators of Texas Scholarship.
The Sabinal Alumni Association recognized seven students with scholarships: Eilee Cavasos, Kyndra Dehoyos-Hernandez, Ezekiel Llanes, Emri Penney, Araceli Ramirez, Isabella Ruiz, and Makayla Torres Ruiz.
TXN Bank awarded scholarships to Eilee Cavasos, Kyndra Dehoyos-Hernandez, and Sergio Vasquez.
Jose Sandoval earned multiple scholarships, including the Daniel Tristan Scholarship from the American Legion Tomas Valle Post 479, the Ann Pierce Memorial Scholarship, and the Sabinal Civic Club Scholarship. Eilee Cavasos also received the Daniel Tristan Scholarship, presented by the American Legion Auxiliary Unit Tomas Valle Post 479.
Ezekiel Llanes earned the Texas Excellence Scholarship.
Eilee Cavasos collected several awards from Schreiner University: the Trustee Scholarship, the Honors Scholarship, and the GRIT Scholarship.
Sergio Vasquez secured the Southwest Texas Ranch Heritage Scholarship and the Hilda Davis Memorial Scholarship.
Eilee Cavasos and Jose Sandoval each earned the Thomas Nunley Memorial Athletic Scholarship.

Graduates, sports
Sergio Vasquez, Morgan Peek and Joe Sandoval graduated with dual credit degrees from Southwest Texas College on Saturday, May 17. Sergio also represented the Sabinal Yellowjackets May 27 at the 2025 Missions Senior Celebration All-Star Game at Wolff Stadium in San Antonio. Morgan Peek made the team for the San Antonio Area Baseball Coaches Association All-Star Game, held May 31 at 6 p.m. at Marion High School in Marion.
River cleanup
The Sabinal Independent School District girls’ athletics department and coaches Kyndel Beck, Jennifer Jackson, Steven Sanchez, and Lauren Stiteler cleaned up 430 pounds of trash May 21 at Chalk Bluff on the Nueces River, via a Texas Hill Country River Region project. This is the second year in a row that the girls have contributed their time and energy and has become a tradition for the girls to participate in an end of year service project.
School updates
Sabinal ISD child nutrition director Kelly Earnhardt announced the school received a $28,500 summer feeding grant to deliver meals, twice a week, to children during the summer months. To sign up, email childnutrition@sabinalisd.net
Registration must include: Child’s name (each child in the family), date of birth, physical address (no post office Boxes), parent or guardian named and contact information, and any known food allergies for the child. There was a kickoff May 30 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Veterans Memorial Live Oak Park in Sabinal. There will be door prizes and a prize for the best-dressed.
