The Sadie Grice Funny Foundation annual fundraising gala is taking place on Friday, Nov. 15, at the InterContinental Hotel Atlanta Buckhead. Named for the mother of Brookhaven City Council member John Funny, the event honors an advocate for education and student empowerment.
Established in 2008, the foundation provides scholarships to students from underserved communities. Through its programs, the foundation continues Sadie Grice Funny’s legacy of inspiring educational excellence and community service.
The six scholarship recipients will each receive $4,000. Since its establishment, the Foundation has awarded more than $250,000 in scholarships.
The foundation also recognizes excellence in leadership, primarily from DeKalb county. This year’s honorees are DeKalb County CEO-elect Lorraine Cochran-Johnson, two-time Olympic medalist Melissa Jefferson, and photojournalist Nassar Madyun.
Presidents of three Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) will be recognized: Dr. Roslyn Clark Artis, Benedict College; Dr. Paul Jones, Fort Valley State University; and Dr. Alexander Conyers, South Carolina State University.
“We are thrilled to honor these exceptional individuals who have made a profound impact in their fields and the lives of countless students,” said John Funny, founder and chairman of the Foundation board.
