Salem Elks Lodge #1678 is proud to announce this year’s scholarship recipients. Four outstanding high school seniors have earned scholarships to support their post-secondary education. These scholarships, totaling more than $10,000, are funded by the Salem Elks Lodge and the Elks National Foundation. Three of the awardees attend Salem Community High School, while the fourth attends Lejeune High School in North Carolina.
Coty Richie Memorial Scholarship – Cole Wimberly
The Coty Richie Memorial Scholarship has been awarded to Cole Wimberly. Cole is the son of Dusty Wimberly and Trisha Endicott of Salem and Rachel and Andy Smith of Evansville, Indiana. Cole has been a well-rounded student who has participated in both fine arts and athletics. Cole has been incredibly involved in choir, theater, and most recently performed in the title role of Beetlejuice. In addition to his time on the stage, Cole could be found at Jim Finks field playing for the Salem Wildcats football team throughout high school. Cole serves as the senior class president and was elected homecoming king this past fall. Additionally, he has been a member of Student Council and has been working as an intern at WJBD through the co-op program. Cole will work towards a degree and career in theater after high school.
Salem Elks – Wes Villalobos Memorial Scholarship – Jalen Inlow
Elks National Foundation Most Valuable Student Scholarship – Jalen Inlow The Salem Elks – Wes Villalobos Memorial Scholarship was presented to Jalen Inlow. The son of Andy and Kristen Inlow of Salem, Jalen is a four-year member of the Salem Wildcats baseball team and has earned All-Conference honors for two years. Jalen is also a member of the National Honor Society, Student Council, Peer Helpers, and Spanish Club. Due to his academic, extra-curricular, and community service endeavors, Jalen was selected as one of the top 500 students nationwide to receive an Elks National Foundation Most Valuable Student Scholarship. He will receive a total of $4,000 from the Elks National Foundation throughout his college career. Jalen will be attending Greenville University where he will play baseball and pursue a degree in engineering.
Salem Elks Teen of the Year – Ella Douglas
Ella Douglas was chosen as the Salem Elks Teen of the Year. Ella is the daughter of Drs. Mike and Britt Douglas. Ella has been actively involved in both 4-H and FFA where she has earned numerous awards and recognition. Her leadership roles include president of Salem FFA, treasurer of Section 21 FFA, and president of the National Honor Society. Known for her leadership, dedication, and enthusiasm, Ella plans to attend the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign to pursue a degree in Agricultural, Consumer, and Environmental Sciences, with a goal of a career in agricultural law.
Elks National Foundation Legacy Award – Olivia Shuler
Olivia Shuler, daughter of Willie and Lynn Shuler of Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, was awarded the Elks National Foundation Legacy Award. She is the granddaughter of Salem Elks members Danny and Elizabeth Shuler and Darrell and Lynn Smith. This $4,000 awards available exclusively to children and grandchildren of Elks members in good standing. While attending high school in Okinawa, Japan and then Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, Olivia has competed at the varsity level of cross country and soccer for four years. In both sports, Olivia and her team members have advanced to post-season action on more than one occasion. A Lejeune Scholar and captain of the soccer team, Olivia’s leadership roles include serving as a Senator in the Student Government Association, president of Future Business Leaders of America, treasurer of National Honor Society, and participating in the Student 2 Student program. Olivia’s service to others extends from the Hungry Hearts program in Salem to the United Way and American Red Cross in North Carolina. In the fall, Olivia will be attending James Madison University in Virginia and majoring in nursing.
