SALSA had another impactful presence at the Cinco de Mayo Celebration on May 3, awarding $5,000 in scholarships to ten 2025 graduates from Brownwood, Early and Zephyr high schools.
Receiving scholarships were, from left to right: Juan Cervantes (BHS/TSTC), Miya Guevara (BHS/McClennan Community College), Camila Hernandez (BHS/Texas Tech), Israel Mendiola (BHS/Tarleton State), Mykaela Mendoza (BHS/UT-San Antonio), Kamila Ramos (BHS/Texas A&M), Julienne Socong (Early/Texas A&M), and Jose Vasquez (BHS/Texas A&M). Since 2021, SALSA has awarded $55,000 in scholarships to students from Brownwood and surrounding communities.
Other winners were Jimmy Nix, who won $600 in the 50-50 raffle. Winning the Overall Best Salsa contest was Robin Wright. Mark Edmonds won the Best Red Salsa contest.
SALSA president Giovanna Garcia said, “We are very proud of our scholarship recipients and wish them all the best in their pursuit of post-secondary education and training.
We also congratulate the winners of our 50-50 raffle and salsa contests. A special thank you to United Supermarket for donating our meat products. And, as in years past, we enjoyed the opportunity to partner with the Arts Council, the City of Brownwood, and celebrating El Cinco de Mayo with the people of Brownwood.”
