SAN ANTONIO — The Fiesta Oyster Bake at St. Mary's University was in full swing Friday night, offering a lively mix of oysters, beer, and music.
Hungry guests lined up with shuckers in hand, eager to enjoy the festivities.
"This grill has been hot all evening," said Destany Fuller, reporting from the oyster pit. "These grill masters are sending thousands of oysters from the grill to your belly with this bucket, and all for a good cause."
Oyster Bake Chair Sean Strater explained the event's purpose, "Fiesta is all about a party with a purpose, right? Everything that we do here is to support a good nonprofit. So Oyster Bake is really here to support the students of St. Mary's University."
The celebration is powered by volunteers, many of whom consider the bake a family tradition.
"Our mom's been doing it for a long time, my mom's been doing it for years, actually. So now that we're finally old enough to come, it's just something we're gonna start doing now," said one volunteer.
Another volunteer added, "This is my first, actually, rodeo with this booth here, invited by my dad. It's been about 14 or plus years that they've been coming down here and doing this."
Fuller noted the scale of the event, saying, "Hundreds of oysters are on the grill, but it's nothing compared to what they still have to get through. 100,000 oysters will pass through here by the time the weekend is over."
