(KNSI) – A Sartell woman’s path to becoming a rural doctor just became significantly more affordable.
Emma Lundgren is a first-year medical student at the University of Minnesota Medical School CentraCare Regional Campus in St. Cloud and has been awarded the inaugural CentraCare Foundation Scholarship for Rural Medicine, covering her full tuition for all four years of medical school.
Growing up in central Minnesota, Lundgren saw healthcare disparities firsthand that would later shape her career aspirations. In her scholarship application essay, she described seeing these challenges affect her own family, fueling her determination to make a difference.
Her undergraduate experience at the College of Saint Benedict broadened her perspective on healthcare access. She studied abroad in Chile and volunteered as a Spanish interpreter at a free clinic in St. Cloud.
The CentraCare Foundation Scholarship for Rural Medicine represents the organization’s first full-tuition award for medical students. The foundation plans to award one full scholarship to each incoming class, with selection based on essays about applicants’ interest in rural medicine and their goals for improving healthcare access.
