Sault College is proud to celebrate the achievements of its newest student award and scholarship recipients for the Fall 2025 semester, recognizing outstanding dedication, academic effort, and community connection among students entering or continuing their studies.
Three local high school students, Emma Simbirski, Kayla Tremblay, and Abigayle McFarlane, have been named Sault College’s most recent recipients of the Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) Award.
Through this scholarship, each student received $1,000 toward their tuition for the current academic year. To be eligible, students must have graduated from high school in June 2025, have applied and been accepted into a Sault College program, and have successfully completed a Specialist High Skills Major in high school that aligns with their postsecondary pathway.
The SHSM Award encourages graduates to continue building on their specialized skills and knowledge as they transition into college studies.
In addition, Sault College is proud to announce the first recipients of The Joyce Family Foundation Bursary; a transformational renewable award of $3,500 per year made possible through a $1 million endowment gift from The Joyce Family Foundation.
Founded by the late Ron Joyce, co-founder of Tim Hortons, the Foundation is dedicated to supporting the social, economic, and emotional well-being of youth by empowering them to overcome adversity and succeed through education. Five students including Nathan Cranston, Juliet Byrne, Payton Hanchuk, Joseph Tremblay and Rebecca Dwyer will be in receipt of the bursary this year.
This fall, five students will each receive $3,500 toward their education, renewable for up to three years of full-time study, depending on program duration and academic standing. The bursary is open to full-time students entering their first year in a two- or three-year program who graduated from a local high school within the past three years, demonstrate significant financial need, and have shown resilience in overcoming obstacles. Recipients are also paired with a faculty mentor and success coach to support their transition to college life and continued academic success.
“The extraordinary generosity of The Joyce Family Foundation and the incredible commitment of our local students highlight the spirit of perseverance that defines our community,” said Sherri Smith, Interim Sault College President. “These awards, including the Specialist High Skills Major Awards, open doors for students who might otherwise face barriers to accessing higher education and help to shape future leaders for our region.”
Sault College’s Student Financial Assistance and Recruitment teams continue to work closely with local high schools to identify promising candidates for these and other awards, ensuring that pathways to post-secondary success remain accessible to all students in Algoma District.
