Savannah State University Navy ROTC Midshipman Matthew Hudson was selected as a finalist for the Navy Federal Credit Union ROTC All-American Scholarship Program. He majors in civil engineering technology, serves as the current commanding officer of Savannah State’s NRTOC detachment, and is involved with several philanthropic organizations on campus and in the community.
“Leadership is mainly about service, because a leader is defined by not what they get, but what they give. The one who gives the most is the best leader. The one who takes the most is often the one that’s least effective and least appreciated by their own people,” said MIDN Matthew Hudson.
This scholarship program honors the best and brightest ROTC seniors across the nation and highlights rising senior ROTC students who best embody the pillars of the program: Leadership, Military Excellence, Scholarship and Service. As a finalist, MIDN Hudson receives a $2,500 scholarship, and SSU’s ROTC Booster Club or Student Fund receives a $1,500 donation.
According to Hudson, “People should join ROTC because it will challenge you to develop as a leader, and it will also give you a wonderful career in which you can empower other people in the service of the military. It empowers me, because I know that I’m doing something that’s a little bigger than me.”
From the 15 finalists, Navy Federal selected and honored the top Air Force, Army and Navy/Marine students as the three ROTC All-American Scholarship Program Students of the Year. The Students of the Year were announced in early December and each received a $6,500 scholarship, a $5,000 donation to their Booster Club or Student Fund, were honored guests of the Go Bowling Military Bowl on December 28 and featured on ESPN’s broadcast of the game. 2024
