CENTRAL — Earlier this week, two students at Daniel High School received the first two scholarships awarded in honor of a former student who drowned last May.
John Pat Chandler and Jueun Choi were awarded the first two Rayan Alnasser Legacy Scholarships, each for $1,500.
Alnasser was a member of the Daniel Lions boys’ soccer team, and the scholarship awarded Monday was created in conjunction with Alnasser’s parents and funds raised by the team.
Joey Sarkees told The Journal that donations that were raised from its Senior Night event the team does each year were contributed toward the scholarship.
A donation page was also created to help supplement the scholarships and included the following description: “The Rayan Alnasser Legacy Scholarship is dedicated to preserving the memory of Rayan Alnasser, a young man whose intelligence, kindness and selfless spirit touched the lives of everyone around him. This scholarship seeks to support students who embody his values — those who excel academically, uplift others and strive to leave a meaningful impact on the world.”
His soccer coach, Thomas Izaguirre, said he remembered Alnasser’s joy.
“He wasn’t your regular kid, in my opinion,” he said. “Every time, no matter what type of practice it was, how bad a practice was, at the end of the day, he was bringing joy to everybody.”
