Sydney Barnes was walking along North Antrim Way when she was hit by a vehicle on Oct. 13. She tragically passed away from her injuries a week later.
And while Barnes was known as an exceptional golfer at the Millersville college, the Greencastle-Antrim School District, in collaboration with the Barnes family, wants to make sure she's remembered for her biggest passion; helping others.
The district said the college athlete had been pursuing a career in medicine—a dream that will now be left "unfulfilled."
"This scholarship—bearing Sydney's name—is offered in the prayerful hope that it will nurture scholars whose pursuit of knowledge and dedication to service reflect Sydney's spirit and her noble aspiration to heal through medicine," the district said in its announcement of the Sydney Hudson Barnes Memorial Scholarship Thursday.
The med student "touched countless" lives and, through the new scholarship, the district is hoping "her light will continue to shine for generations to come."
CBS 21 has covered Barnes' case extensively, with many remembering the 21-year-old as having an "impact on her hometown community."
