A new scholarship ensures the legacy of fallen Chicago Police officer Areanah Preston lives on.
The life and aspirations of fallen Chicago Police Officer Aréanah Preston are being honored with a new scholarship ensuring her legacy continues.
On Wednesday, Loyola University announced a $100,000 endowment in Preston’s name, creating an annual scholarship for those pursuing studies at the university’s School of Law with a commitment to public service, social justice, and community impact.
What we know:
The announcement was made at Loyola’s law school, where Preston was just one week away from earning her Master of Jurisprudence when she was tragically killed in a robbery attempt two years ago outside her Avalon Park home.
Preston, who had dreamed of joining the FBI, was remembered as a bright light within the Chicago Police Department.
Her family, including her mother Dionne Mhoon, and city leaders such as Mayor Brandon Johnson and Chief Yolanda Talley of the Chicago Police Department attended the event.
Chief Talley highlighted the family’s resilience, saying, "They have turned heartbreak and tragedy into light, the same light that Aréanah left in the Chicago Police Department and our city."
The scholarship, funded by the Peace for Preston Foundation, will provide financial assistance to Chicago police officers, civilian staff, and law students at Loyola.
What they’re saying:
"Breathe life into your children," said Mhoon, reflecting on her daughter’s impact. "Even Aréanah in her death. She’s my reason. My foundation is my reason."
Preston’s mother also pledged her commitment to the initiative, saying she will attend every check presentation for the scholarship.
What’s next:
The scholarship is set to be awarded annually, supporting individuals dedicated to making a difference through public service and social justice.
The Peace for Preston Foundation continues to honor Aréanah Preston’s legacy by transforming tragedy into opportunities for others.
