CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) — A local nonprofit that brings music education to children and musical performances to the community has created a new scholarship program.
The Front Porch has launched the Emily Robey Morrison Music Scholarship, which is designed to make music education more accessible to students of all ages, backgrounds and skill levels.
According to a release, recipients will get a year of free group classes, private lessons and instrument rentals at the nonprofit and have a chance to stay in the program for subsequent years.
Applications are being accepted through the end of June.
The Front Porch says it’s looking for applicants who have a passion for music, a commitment to learning and a financial situation that would make it difficult to pay for the suite of lessons.
It also hopes to find highly motivated students for whom this access would be a transformative experience.
The scholarship has been created to honor educator, musician and community builder Emily Robey Morrison, with the Front Porch saying it reflects her lifelong commitment to equity, inclusion and the power of music.
Morrison was the first executive director at the Front Porch, and she helped to shape the programs that are still impacting students there.
“We are thrilled to launch this scholarship in Emily’s name,” said Katen Reynolds, executive director of The Front Porch. “Her work laid the foundation for who we are as an organization — welcoming, joyful, and accessible. This scholarship helps ensure that no one is turned away from music education due to financial barriers, and we can ensure that highly motivated students get the support they need.”
This scholarship is open to all ages, with at least two spots reserved specifically for youth ages 12 and up, and one slot for an adult 18 and up.
