The Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship provides financial support to doctoral students wishing to study in Canada.
The Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships programme is aimed at students who are due to study a doctoral programme in health research, natural sciences and/or engineering, or social sciences and humanities in Canada.
The scholarship supports students who are engaged in research that is relevant to addressing some of the world’s most pressing challenges, such as climate change, improved health outcomes and poverty reduction.
Successful applicants will receive C$50,000 (£31,000) a year for three years. This reward can be used towards a doctoral degree or combined master’s and PhD. This amount has been set to cover university fees, living expenses and other costs that students might incur during their studies.

The cost of studying at a university in Canada
Candidates must be nominated by a Canadian institution that has space to host Vanier scholars at the degree start date. Individuals cannot apply directly to the Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship, so make sure you speak to your university about your nomination as soon as you have made your final choice. You can read the selection guide in more detail on the government website.
Successful Vanier Scholars have leadership skills and academic achievements in the social sciences and humanities, natural sciences and/or engineering and health. Applicants are judged on three areas of equally weighted criteria: academic excellence, research potential, and leadership, both potential and proven in the past.
The scholarship can be awarded to up to 166 students each year, with about 500 recipients at any time. The scholarship is open to both international and domestic students.
