The cost of attending college — room, board, books, tuition, the works — has risen sharply in the last 40 years. In the last two decades alone it’s jumped 65 percent, from $8,700 to $14,300 per year, according to information at bestcolleges.com.
That’s why a little help from grants and scholarships helps to cushion the sticker shock.
To that end,  the Solano Community Foundation is accepting scholarship applications for 2024. The total amount to be awarded this year is $115,000.
The deadline to submit is April 4. To learn more and to apply for scholarships, visit https://bit.ly/scf-scholarship-opp.
In a news release from SCF contact Jennifer Saelee, the nonprofit has had an “underwhelming” number of scholarship applicants in previous years.
SCF’s goal in 2024 is to expand outreach to increase the number of applicants and asking the community to help spread the news to expand scholarship opportunities throughout Solano County, she added in the prepared statement.
Donors interested in supporting scholarship opportunities for Solano County students may contact SCF at (707) 399-3846.
SCF scholarships are offered annually and made possible by the Harry and Eleanor D. Nelson Vacaville Endowment Fund and the James W. Caughy and Florence L. Caughy Verbeek Vacaville High School Memorial Service Award Endowment Fund, which will last forever.
“They were established by local donors passionate about investing in our youth for generations to come,” Saelee added in the statement.
The criteria for each scholarship varies to include academic achievement, community involvement, and financial need.
