One of the three pillars of service for the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR) is education. One way that the society supports education is by offering scholarships at not only the national level but also at state and local levels.
NSDAR scholarships
Each year the National Society (NSDAR) awards multiple scholarships to students showing dedication to the pursuit of higher education in diverse areas of study. DAR’s scholarships are awarded and judged without regard to gender, race, color, religion, national origin or disability. However, applicants must prove United States citizenship. Class rank, SAT or ACT is no longer required. For detailed information, applicants should access the NSDAR website at https://www.dar.org/national-society /scholarships.
An applicant should carefully review the eligibility criteria for each scholarship to determine if they are eligible to apply. For example, some scholarships are available to all types of students, such as graduating high school students, those currently enrolled in a college or university or those accepted or currently enrolled in graduate school.
Other scholarships may have specific eligibility criteria requiring specific documentation, such as current enrollment or a letter of acceptance in a nursing program or medical school, a child of a DAR member, a tribal card, or a student pursuing a certain field of study (e.g., music or chemistry).
All applications are submitted using the online portal https://dar.academicworks.com, which opens Nov. 1 and closes Jan. 31 each year.
The DAR Scholarship Committee does not process DAR Good Citizens, American Indian, or DAR School scholarships, which are also available from NSDAR.
ISDAR scholarships
The Iowa Society Daughters of the American Revolution (ISDAR) awards two scholarships for graduating high school students who plan to attend a U.S. Department of Education accredited school of post-secondary education.
He or she must have a minimum of a 3.0 grade point average based on a 4.0 scale, or equivalent. The scholarship shall be awarded based upon merit and financial need. Each applicant must be sponsored by a local DAR chapter.
The two scholarships awarded by the Iowa Society are the ISDAR Scholarship and the Amelia Jenks Bloomer Scholarship. Each scholarship is $1,000. The criteria and the application process are the same for both scholarships. Each ISDAR chapter may nominate only one student for each scholarship. They may nominate the same student for both scholarships if the chapter wishes.
The scholarship fund is intended to assist worthy young people to complete a higher education. The applicant must be an American citizen, an Iowa resident, and be of good character. For additional information, including the application form, see the scholarship page on the ISDAR website: https://isdar.org/members/ISDAR_Committee_Files/2024/DAR_Scholarship.html.
Completed applications for Iowa Society scholarships are due to the ISDAR Scholarship Chair by Jan. 15.
Revolutionary Dames chapter scholarship
The Mayrose Lane Scholarships were activated locally in 2000. Mayrose Lane along with her mother Faye were Revolutionary Dames chapter members for many years. Miss Lane, an educator, left a gift to the chapter to help further the NSDAR mission of education.
These funds continue to enable the chapter to offer a $300 scholarship to a graduating high schooler with post-secondary education plans who is a descendant of any living or deceased Revolutionary Dames member. For more information, contact the chapter at revolutionarydamesnsdar@gmail.com.
