SANTA CRUZ — The Santa Cruz Parks and Recreation Department and Friends of Parks and Recreation Santa Cruz recently announced awarding more than $45,000 in scholarships for local youth to participate in summer camps and activities.
Among the young recipients, 55% are enrolled in MediCal, according to a statement from the city of Santa Cruz.
“Every child deserves the chance to engage in enriching summer activities that foster growth and development,” said Friends of Park and Recreation Board President Hollie Locatelli. “By awarding these scholarships, we are not only opening doors to exciting experiences but also ensuring that no child is left behind due to economic barriers.”
Friends of Parks and Recreation provides funding and support for public events and programs for youth and seniors in the city such as the Santa Cruz Teen Center and the Senior Computer Center at the London Nelson Community Center, among others.
The scholarships from Friends of Parks and Recreation and Santa Cruz Parks and Recreation were made possible by donors and organizations such as the Santa Cruz Chapter of Omega Nu, the J.R. Scott family, the Junior Guard Boosters, Santa Cruz City Schools, and the City of Santa Cruz Children’s Fund.
The awards will help local young people to participate in summer activities such as sports camps, Junior Guards, art workshops, STEM courses, and outdoor field trips.
“By offering diverse opportunities, we aim to cater to the interests and passions of all youth in our community,” said Parks and Recreation Director Tony Elliot in a statement.
