New scholarships are becoming available to help people working in child care in New Hampshire.
The state-funded scholarships are available to people working in preschools or day cares and are aimed at helping them afford their own child care.
The scholarships are also open to parents looking for such jobs and those in training programs.
According to the New Hampshire Fiscal Policy Institute, the cost of child care for two children is more than $30,000 per year. The average pay for child care workers is about $16 per hour.

Experts said that the disparity is pricing some teachers out of their own field. Those working in child care said the financial support will help prop up the state’s growing workforce and economy.
“We know every industry has shortages, but when the child care workforce can’t show up or isn’t there, so many other workforces are affected,” said Jackie Cowell, of Early Learning NH.
There are some income requirements for the scholarships. Applications are available on New Hampshire’s Gateway to Services website.
