GRIFFIN — Southern Crescent Technical College (SCTC) is proud to announce that Deigo McGhee, a civil engineering Technology student at the SCTC Fayette County Center and a resident of Griffin, has been awarded a $1,000 Civil Engineering scholarship for Summer Semester 2025.
This scholarship is made possible through the Technical College System of Georgia (TCSG) Foundation and is sponsored by the Southern Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (SASHTO), which is committed to fostering workforce development in the transportation industry.
SASHTO pledged $16,000 in October 2024 to establish scholarships at 11 technical colleges across Georgia. These scholarships will support students pursuing degrees in civil engineering technology or engineering technology, helping address workforce shortages and develop the next generation of skilled professionals in the transportation sector.
McGhee is a dedicated student attending classes in the evenings. After class, he heads to Atlanta to work with the Department of Homeland Security overnight.
In the summer, McGhee has secured an internship with the Georgia Department of Transportation, with the assistance of SCTC Instructor Charlie Armour.
“This generous contribution will help eliminate financial barriers for students like Diego, allowing them to focus on their education and career goals,” Armour emphasized. “By investing in our students, SASHTO is directly supporting the growth of a highly skilled workforce that will shape the future of transportation infrastructure.”
Civil engineering technology is a high-demand career due to increasing infrastructure investments and urban development. The field faces a workforce shortage as experienced professionals retire, creating opportunities for new talent.
Civil engineering technicians are essential in transportation, construction, and public works projects, supporting engineers with design, surveying, and materials testing. With strong job prospects and competitive salaries, this career path offers stability and growth for graduates.
Scholarships like these play a crucial role in closing the skills gap in the civil engineering industry, ensuring that more students have access to the education and training needed to succeed.
The Civil Engineering Technology program at SCTC provides hands-on training in surveying, materials testing, construction management, and design principles preparing graduates for careers in transportation, infrastructure development, and public works.
