Thirty-five students from Selma High School and Dallas County schools recently completed a program designed to prepare them for success after high school.
The program was presented by the Selma (AL) Chapter of The Links, Incorporated. The organization partnered with area schools as part of their Integrated Program led by the Services to Youth Facet under the leadership of LaShauna Taylor and Phenicia Nunn.
Students attended five sessions during January and March focused on skills for independent living and life after high school.
Bullying Prevention and Self-Esteem was presented by Dr. Alisha Smiley Rudolph, mental health and truancy coordinator, Selma City School system. Health and Wellness was presented by Carolyn Deyampert-Grider. Financial literacy was presented by LaShauna Taylor, agency owner of Farmers Insurance. College Readiness and Voter Registration was provided by Dr. Donitha Griffin, executive dean of students at Wallace Community College. Career Development and Financial Aid was presented by Dr. Willietta Conner with the Alabama Department of Education.
This program ended in April with a graduation for the participating seniors. The speaker for the occasion was Clifford Hunter, Selma Career Center Area 5 supervisor. Each of the seniors at the graduation received a monetary scholarship.
During the celebration, the chair of the Services to Youth program, LaShuana Taylor, thanked the administration and staff of the participating high schools, especially Patricia Farrior and Dr. Dorothy Moore.
In addition to the annual youth program, the Selma (AL) Chapter gives out four or more college scholarships every year and encourages students to apply.
