OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. (KSWO) – More students across Oklahoma may soon be able to apply for the Tulsa Reconciliation Education and Scholarship Program as Senate Bill 1054 moves to the House for consideration.
Oklahoma Senators unanimously approved of the bill, which if passed, would raise the scholarship’s income limit to $125,000 with no cap for descendants from the Tulsa Race Massacre.
The measure also aims to expand eligibility for students in other states who are descendants from the Tulsa Race Massacre.
Currently, the scholarship requires students to reside in the Tulsa School District and have a taxable family income under $70,000 and attend a Tulsa public school where 75% or more of the students qualify for the free and reduced lunch program.
Students living in an area where 30% or more people live at or below the poverty line also qualify for the scholarship.
The Tulsa Reconciliation Education and Scholarship Program was created nearly 25 years ago to address the impact of the Tulsa Race Massacre.
This scholarship can be used at any college, university, or CareerTech in Oklahoma.
